National Careers Service
The National Careers Service is the publicly funded careers service for adults and young people (aged 13 or over) in England.
Launched in April 2012, it brings together elements of previous publicly funded careers services for adults and young people.
The launch was reported by the BBC〔http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17624003〕 and commented on by organisations such as NIACE,〔http://www.niace.org.uk/news/niace-welcomes-national-careers-service〕 the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services,〔http://www.agcas.org.uk/articles/534〕 and NAEGA.〔http://www.naega.org.uk/2012/04/launch-of-national-careers-service/〕
The National Careers Service provides information, advice and guidance on learning, training, career choice, career development, job search, and the labour market. It can be accessed online, by telephone, and face to face (for people aged 19 and over).
The aims of the service are to provide:
*“high-quality information about careers and skills, and independent, professional advice and guidance”
*“a focus on specialist careers guidance, built on the principles of independence and professional standards”
*“information, advice and guidance both to inform and to stimulate demand for further education, work-based training and higher education.”〔http://www.bis.gov.uk/assets/biscore/further-education-skills/docs/f/11-1380-further-education-skills-system-reform-plan〕
==History==

The idea of a careers service for everyone aged 13 and over was raised in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills strategy document ‘Investing in Skills for Sustainable Growth’ published in November 2010.〔http://www.bis.gov.uk/assets/biscore/further-education-skills/docs/s/10-1272-strategy-investing-in-skills-for-sustainable-growth.pdf〕 Plans for the new service were laid out in a further document, ‘New Challenges, New Chances: Further Education and Skills System Reform Plan: Building a World Class Skills System’, published December 2011.〔
